In addition to CILT's annual statewide leadership program, the Institute has developed a wide range of programs and services including issue salons where one can discuss current issues, happy hours and networking events, alumni workshops, and social/cultural events such as theater tickets and Rockies games. Most of these events are open to the public. The actual classes, alumni workshops, and alumni retreats are reserved for CILT alumni and current class members. Planting the Seeds of Democracy amid Bombs and Bullets. How will this garden grow?

 

 

Peter Kenney will share his experiences and observations after spending more than a year in Baghdad providing training and guidance to Iraqis on local governance.

 

This promises to be a fascinating event with an opportunity to talk one on one with an eyewitness to Iraqi efforts at democracy.

Background:

 

Peter Kenney is co-founder and principal of Civic Results - formerly the Center for Regional and Neighborhood Action - CRNA. Peter spent more than 20 years as an elected official in Clear Creek County; he led the formation of the Metro Mayors Caucus and continues to advise them. Since leaving county government in 1993 he has designed and facilitated processes for strategic planning, collaborative decision making and regional problem solving for public, private and nonprofit clients.

 

 

In Iraq he worked for the Research Triangle Institute - USAID's prime contractor for local governance. He designed and delivered a training program for more than 1500 elected Iraqi council members as well as leading the Baghdad Provincial Council, Baghdad City Council and Baghdad Regional Council through drafting and adopting home rule charters. He continues to provide support and guidance to the 127 local councils in Baghdad Province.
